Academy Commends USDA Sustainability Initiative

06/01/2022 - Academy representatives participated in an event hosted by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack in Washington, DC. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the new sustainability framework. The Academy supports this effort and will work with the USDA to transform the country's food system to benefit both consumers and producers by creating more and better markets. Many of the USDA's goals for the initiative align with the Academy's policy priorities which have been communicated extensively through advocacy and engagement with the Biden Administration.

Taking lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic and today's supply chain disruptions, the goals of the USDA's Food System Transformation framework include:

  • Building a more resilient food supply chain that offers more and better market options for both producers and consumers while reducing carbon pollution
  • Creating new, more and better local market options, resulting in a fairer food system that combats market dominance and helps consumers and producers gain more power in the marketplace
  • Making nutritious food more accessible and affordable for consumers
  • Emphasizing equity in communities across the country
