The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics supports the reintroduction of the School Food Modernization Act (H.R.5731), bipartisan legislation designed to help schools upgrade aging kitchen facilities, purchase durable equipment and provide training that supports safe, appealing and nutritious meals for students.
The bill directs the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide loan guarantees and grants to enable schools to renovate or build kitchen facilities, purchase durable and energy efficient kitchen equipment, and strengthen professional development for food and nutrition service personnel. These practical investments will help school districts modernize outdated kitchens, making them more capable of preparing meals from scratch, improve food safety and efficiency, and better meet science-based nutrition standards.
Strengthening school food infrastructure is essential to improving food safety, reducing waste, and ensuring every child has access to nutritious meals that support learning and health. Members are encouraged to contact their U.S. Representative in support of the School Food Modernization Act.
