The Academy recently submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on a proposed reorganization that could have major implications for federal nutrition programs and resources.
In the comments, the Academy underscores concerns about the lack of attention to USDA's Food and Nutrition Service and the planned closure of the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center, which provides essential data used to shape national nutrition policy. These resources directly impact the ability of registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) and nutrition and dietetics technicians, registered (NDTRs) to deliver evidence-based care and support the health of individuals and communities.
We urged USDA to safeguard funding, staffing and infrastructure for the programs that form the backbone of federal nutrition policy, including:
- MyPlate.gov: helping people make everyday food choices.
- Food Data Central: the nation's nutrient database.
- Nutrition Evidence Systematic Review (NESR): informs the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
- WIC, SNAP and School Meal Programs: ensuring access to nutritious food for millions.
The Academy stressed that the expertise of RDNs and NDTRs is essential for shaping policies that link healthy food production, access to nutritious foods and the health of our communities. The Academy and its members stand ready to work with USDA to ensure policies are science and evidence-based and make a real difference for the health of all Americans.
