Successful governing bodies define and delegate rather than react and ratify. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' leadership and governing structure allows the Board of Directors to govern the organization while the House of Delegates governs the profession.
Both the Board of Directors and House of Delegates represent all Academy members. The Board sets and monitors the strategic direction of the Academy, establishes policy within the organization, directs the Academy's budgeting and finance activities, and monitors operational performance of the CEO.
Governance is a core function of the HOD. The process by which the House of Delegates and the Academy are governed is known as Knowledge-Based Strategic Governance. Knowledge-Based Strategic decision making provides time for delegates to have a dialogue on mega issues from a base of knowledge, while bringing their own ideas and their members’ ideas to the dialogue. This creates an environment where decisions regarding the profession are based on knowledge rather than politics or passion.
The groups work in collaboration to ensure members of the Academy are the leading source of food and nutrition services. And, members are invited to get involved with the Academy's governance on any level — from learning more about current trends affecting the profession or submitting professional issues and concerns to volunteering for a committee or running for a national leadership position — the Academy wants to hear from members and wants to know your ideas, concerns and issues.
Academy governance includes the House of Delegates and Board of Directors. The HOD governs the profession and develops policy on major professional issues; the BOD governs the Academy and Academy staff implement decisions.
