Academy and ASN Joint Task Force Publishes Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Resource Guide

Published April 7, 2026

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the work of dietetics professionals as its use expands across practice areas, including food supply monitoring and analyzing dietary patterns to support clinical decision-making, highlighting the need for practice standards.

The Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Resource Guide, developed by a joint task force from the Academy and the American Society for Nutrition (ASN), was published in ASN's The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and offers practical guidance for using AI responsibly in nutrition practice and research.

The guide provides a starting point for building the knowledge and skills needed to explore how AI can be used in nutrition practice and research. It also helps professionals identify key factors to consider when evaluating AI tools on the market, such as transparency, data quality and alignment with ethical guidelines amongst other factors.

Additionally, the guide supports dietetics professionals in applying these considerations in practice, including understanding how a tool works, whether it has been reviewed for bias, and how it aligns with professional standards.

The task force plans to expand this work in a future publication that will examine industry-specific nuances and challenges across different areas of nutrition.
