Academy Urges USDA to Extend Child Nutrition Waivers

10/02/2020 - After Senate passage on September 30, President Trump signed the bipartisan continuing resolution avoiding a government shutdown and expanding the U.S. Department of Agriculture waiver authority for both child nutrition programs and WIC, as well as the Pandemic EBT program through September 2021. The Academy calls for the U.S. Department of Agriculture to swiftly extend the child nutrition waivers for the duration of the 2020-21 school year.

On Friday, October 2, the Academy sent nearly 3,000 letters to USDA from member advocates calling for the agency to extend critical child nutrition program flexibilities through the end of the school year. Earlier this school year, USDA extended the waivers through December 2020, stating that they did not have the funding to extend them beyond the end of the calendar year. Given the new provisions in the stop-gap spending bill, USDA now has explicit authority and funding to extend the waivers.

The Academy will continue to monitor the situation and advocate for flexibilities through the 2020-21 school year.
