Academy Statement on March 12 Florida Licensure Vote

The Academy is gratified that the Florida Senate and House have passed amended legislation that maintains professional competencies of health care practitioners with expertise in nutrition care services.

03/12/2020 - Everyone deserves safe and effective health care from qualified practitioners. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is gratified that the Florida Senate and House have passed amended legislation that maintains professional competencies of health care practitioners with expertise in nutrition care services. This amended legislation reduces the risk of harm not just for the most vulnerable citizens in hospitals and long-term care facilities, but for all Floridians.

This narrowly tailored, compromise approach to the provision of complex medical nutrition therapies manifests the Florida legislature's recognition of the importance of high-quality nutrition care. We commend the dedicated efforts of the Florida Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the 5,252 Florida registered dietitian nutritionists and encourage Gov. DeSantis to sign this legislation into law.

In Florida and throughout the country, the Academy will continue to advocate for high professional standards that protect the public.
