05/12/2021 - With the Medical Nutrition Therapy Act officially reintroduced in the 117th U.S. Congress, the Academy hosted 55 advocates in a virtual lobby day. Advocates from across the country met yesterday with more than 50 congressional offices to discuss this importance of the piece of legislation, which would:
- Expand Medicare coverage for MNT to beneficiaries with diet-related chronic diseases, including prediabetes, obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, malnutrition, eating disorders, cancer, gastrointestinal diseases including celiac disease, HIV/AIDS, cardiovascular disease and unintentional weight loss.
- Authorize nurse practitioners, physician assistants, clinical nurse specialists and clinical psychologists to refer their patients for MNT.
- Address health equity by providing care for many chronic conditions that disproportionately impact minority communities.
The Academy will soon call on all Academy members to support the Medical Nutrition Therapy Act. Next steps will be shared in the coming weeks.
