06/01/2020 - The Academy sent recommendations to the Centers for Medicare and Medicare in response to the agency's request for input regarding the telehealth waivers and flexibilities set forth in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act). Specifically, comments were provided on the following areas:

  1. Payment for Medicare Telehealth Services Under Section 1834(m) of the Act
  2. Telehealth Modalities and Cost-sharing
  3. Communication Technology-Based Services
  4. Rural Health Clinics and Federally Qualified Health Centers
  5. Innovation Center Models
  6. Telephone Evaluation and Management Services
  7. Application of Certain National Coverage Determination and Local Coverage Determination Requirements During the PHE for the COVID-19 Pandemic
  8. Merit-based Incentive Payment System Updates

The Academy also urged CMS to extend current telehealth flexibilities that improve access to Medical Nutrition Therapy beyond the current pandemic to ensure that there is sufficient health care and services available by all distant site providers to meet the needs of individuals enrolled in Medicare. The Academy will continue to work with CMS of these efforts.
