Academy Has Initial Mixed Reaction to Proposed Rule Changes; Further Analysis Underway

01/17/2020 - Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the Simplifying Meal Service and Monitoring Requirements in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs proposed rule which contains provisions that may threaten progress in providing children access to nutritious foods during the school day.

Specifically, the Academy will be examining the provisions that address the variety of vegetables and Smart Snack Nutrition Standards in the proposed rule.

Many Academy members work in child nutrition programs that will be impacted by this ruling as well as another ruling made today by the USDA pertaining to the Streamlining Program Requirements and Improving Integrity in the Summer Food Service Program, which is more consistent with the Academy's child nutrition priorities

These rules are anticipated to be published in the Federal Register next week and open for comment. The Academy plans to submit comments in consultation with the School Nutrition Services DPG and Academy members in response to the changes in these two new proposed rules.
