Academy Commends Formation of USDA Equity Commission

10/29/2021 - The Academy commends the U.S. Department of Agriculture for the formation of the new Equity Commission, which will examine racial equity issues within U.S. Department of Agriculture and its programs. The Academy selected two members for consideration to serve on the 15-member commission: Tessa Nguyen, RD, LDN and Avtar Nijjer-Sidhu PhD, RD.

According to the USDA, "the purpose of the EC is to advise the Secretary of Agriculture by facilitating identification of critical USDA programs, policies, systems, structures, and practices that contribute to barriers to inclusion or access, systemic discrimination, or exacerbate or perpetuate racial, economic, health and social disparities."

The Academy is dedicated to nominating members to serve on influential boards, committees and task forces and encourages Academy members to consider submitting a nomination for future opportunities. Any Academy members interested in applying for consideration to be nominated to serve on the new Equity Commission, please contact Mark Rifkin, MS, RDN, manager, Consumer Protection and Regulation by Friday, November 19.
