03/07/2022 - March marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the federal Senior Nutrition Program – a half-century of initiatives that ensure older adults have access to healthful meals and critical nutrition care services.
"Celebrating 50 years of the Senior Nutrition Program during National Nutrition Month® underscores the impact of these important programs in communities across the country," said Academy President Kevin L. Sauer, PhD, RDN, LD, FAND. "The Academy commends the Administration for Community Living and registered dietitian nutritionists working in these programs, which would not be possible without the continued investment in the Older Americans Act, one of the Academy's top policy and advocacy priorities."
The Older Americans Act authorizes nutrition programs including congregate and home-delivered nutrition services that serve millions of primarily low-income seniors every year. They address hunger, malnutrition and isolation and allow older adults to remain in their homes and communities longer.
