08/26/2019 - Last week, the Academy hosted the inaugural Nutrition and Health Equity Summit in Chicago, Ill. Health and nutrition experts from all backgrounds came together to explore perspectives on the role of nutrition and the untapped power of community engagement, with health equity champions Reps. Danny K. Davis (Ill.) and Robin Kelly (Ill.) providing remarks.
"Nutrition is a critical component of overall health," said registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy President Terri J. Raymond in her remarks. "Chronic disease treatment guidelines for diabetes, heart disease, cancer and hypertension all include diet and lifestyle management."
Health disparities exist when the differences in health outcomes are impacted by racial, ethnic, geographic or socioeconomic status. The Nutrition and Health Equity Summit is a collaborative effort with the Academy, UI Mile Square Health Center and Congressman Danny K. Davis (Ill.).
In her remarks, Sharon Cox, MA, RDN, LDN, FAND, House of Delegates director on the Academy's Board of Directors, highlighted the importance of this event dedicated to nutrition and health equity with attendees from a variety of backgrounds.
"By having policy leaders, health professionals and community leaders from across all sectors come together for this event, we are taking the first of many steps to the path of health equity for all," said Raymond. "Support of and investment in policies and practices that acknowledge health disparities are critical to design interventions to intentionally address them."
The conversation about health equity will continue at the Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo™ 2019, October 26-29 in Philadelphia, Pa., with with a dedicated track on diversity and cultural competency.
