Academy Requests Additional Medicare Telehealth Flexibilities and Guidance from CMS

04/24/2020 - The COVID-19 relief packages passed by Congress in March collectively granted the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services broad flexibilities to modify Medicare and Medicaid rules, including the ability for Medicare to waive restrictions on the use of telehealth.

In a letter sent to Secretary of Health Alex Azar and CMS Administrator Seema Verma on April 23, the Academy commended the Administration for acting to swiftly allow telehealth in Medicare across the country. The Academy requested several additional flexibilities including allowing audio-only telehealth for seniors who cannot operate audio-visual technologies, and requested clarification on issues including supervision requirements for incident-to billing and billing for hospital outpatient departments.
