Carl Barnes is the executive director of the Wholesome Village Inc., in Rockville, Md., and the president of United Nutrition Group LLC and Chow Solutions LLC, both in Kensington, Md., providing foodservice and nutrition consulting services. He served in the Unites States Army from 2010 to 2022. From 2020 to 2022, he was a dietitian in the U.S. Army Reserves’ 256th Field Hospital.

Previously, he was deputy chief of the nutrition care division at Brian D. Allgood Army Community Hospital at U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys in the Republic of Korea; chief of food operations at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center; and food inspection specialist at the 6252nd U.S. Army Hospital in San Diego, Calif.

Carl is a member of the Academy’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access Committee and chair of the Foundation’s Early Career Development Committee. Carl served on the Academy Foundation’s Board of Directors in 2014-2016. He is the founder of RD2BE, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing diversity and access in the nutrition and dietetics profession. Carl is a graduate of San Diego State University and received a master’s degree from Baylor University.
