Academy Urges Congress to Permanently Expand Telehealth in Medicare

07/29/2021 - Early in the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency, Congress allowed Medicare to expand coverage of telehealth visits. Prior to the public-health emergency, telehealth visits were generally restricted to beneficiaries living in rural or medically underserved areas.

Last week, the Academy joined 429 other organizations on a letter to congressional leaders requesting they permanently remove these outdated location restrictions on telehealth access and ensure that federally qualified health centers, critical access hospitals, and rural health clinics can furnish services via telehealth. These recommendations are in line with the new telehealth policy stance that the Academy unveiled in April.
