Academy Engages in United Nations Healthy Food Systems Summit Preparation Through USDA Dialogues

07/06/2021 - In September 2021, the United Nations will hold a Healthy Food Systems Summit in conjunction with the UN General Assembly. The preparatory process for this summit is underway and the Academy has been an active participant, with the UN providing multiple opportunities to gather information across stakeholder groups, ranging from country-level input to individual voices. One of these strategic opportunities is the "Member State Summit Dialogues" which is led by high-level country officials and administered by Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Dr. Jewel Bronaugh. Jeanne Blankenship, vice president, Policy Initiatives and Advocacy, has represented the position of Academy throughout these dialogues.

On June 30, the U.S. Department of Agriculture conducted its third and final dialogue entitled, "Final U.S. National Food Systems Dialogue: Pathways for More Sustainable U.S. Food Systems - Food Systems Summit Dialogues." The results of the "Member State Dialogues," along with the summaries of thousands of independent dialogues, such as those led by the Hunger and Environmental Dietetics Practice Group in conjunction with Academy staff, will be used to inform the Healthy Food Systems Summit.

The timing of the summit aligns with the Academy's convening its Healthy and Sustainable Food Systems Task Force led by the Legislative and Public Policy Committee. This task force will explore opportunities for incorporating sustainability into Academy policy initiatives.
