Hall 1
CPE: 1.5
Proficiency: Advanced knowledge/expertise
Track: Women's Health
Theme: Clinical Updates & Evolving Practice
Description
Midlife brings profound hormonal and metabolic shifts that accelerate muscle loss, increase visceral fat, and reduce insulin sensitivity—yet most practitioners lack updated, evidence-based frameworks to support women through this transition. This advanced interdisciplinary session integrates nutrition science, hormone therapy, and strength-based movement to help RDNs address anabolic resistance, preserve lean mass, and improve body composition in perimenopausal and menopausal women. Through real-world case studies, emerging research, and collaborative care strategies, attendees will gain practical tools to optimize metabolic health and deliver high-impact, personalized interventions for midlife clients.
Learning Objectives
Describe hormonal and metabolic changes in perimenopause/menopause and explain their impact on body composition, muscle protein synthesis, and insulin sensitivity in midlife women.
Identify evidence-based nutrition and exercise strategies—including optimal protein distribution, resistance training approaches, and metabolic-supportive behaviors—that improve lean mass preservation and reduce visceral fat during midlife.
Demonstrate applying an interdisciplinary model integrating nutrition counseling, hormone therapy considerations, and pelvic/orthopedic strength strategies to design personalized, outcomes-focused interventions for midlife women.
Performance Indicators
2.1.1 Applies cultural humility and competence, and consideration for social determinants of health in a variety of settings (e.g., health care, education, business) to show respect for individuals, groups and populations.
3.3.3 Identifies opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships with individuals or organizations with shared visions.
5.1.2 Interprets and integrates evidence-based research and literature in decision making.
