Learning Lounge: When GI Dietary Interventions Go Too Far: Recognizing Disordered Eating in GI Care
Sunday, October 25, 2026
-
Track: Gut Health & the Microbiome
Description
Dietary interventions are a cornerstone of gastrointestinal (GI) nutrition therapy, yet the growing popularity of elimination diets and “gut health” protocols has increased the risk of overly restrictive eating patterns in GI patients. Emerging evidence shows a significant overlap between GI disorders and disordered eating behaviors, highlighting the need for clinicians to recognize when therapeutic diets may not be a suitable treatment, as it might contribute to harm. This session will equip attendees with practical screening questions and counseling strategies to identify and address disordered eating patterns in patients looking to follow GI dietary interventions, and provide alternative tactics. Participants will leave with concise, immediately applicable tools to support more balanced and sustainable nutrition care for patients with GI issues
Learning Objectives
