Learning Lounge: Going Back to the Basics: How do RDNs treat Alpha Gal Syndrome?

Sunday, October 25, 2026

-

Track: Chronic Disease Prevention & Management

Description

Alpha‑gal syndrome, often referred to as “red meat allergy,” is characterized by an IgE‑mediated hypersensitivity reaction following ingestion of galactose‑α‑1,3‑galactose, a carbohydrate found in mammalian‑derived foods and products. Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) play a critical role in the identification, education, and nutritional management of individuals with alpha‑gal syndrome. This presentation will provide an overview of the etiology, pathophysiology, and treatment considerations of alpha‑gal syndrome, equipping RDNs with foundational knowledge and practical tools to effectively address this increasingly recognized food allergy.

Learning Objectives

  • After this Learning Lounge presentation, the attendee should be able to describe the nutritional implications and dietary considerations associated with alpha gal sensitivity.
