CPE: 1.5

Proficiency: Intermediate knowledge/experience

Tracks: Gut Health & the Microbiome, Behavioral & Mental Health

Theme: Clinical Updates & Evolving Practice

Description

Healthcare encounters don’t occur in a vacuum; patients come with histories that shape how they experience every aspect of their care. Once thought to be relegated to mental health spaces, trauma-informed care seeks to honor those experiences and provide safe care. Providers working in the GI sphere are especially called upon to offer trauma-informed care due to the sensitive, and sometimes invasive, nature of their investigations. Registered dietitians and NDTRs may struggle to identify how trauma shapes their work with patients or how to respond effectively to both explicit disclosures and subtle trauma responses in relation to food and dietary interventions. This session will explore Polyvagal Theory as a lens to understand nervous system regulation and accompanying patient presentation. Clinicians will learn how to apply aspects of trauma-informed care to both clinic and counseling settings to improve patient experience and outcomes. The session will focus on skill-building related to patient communications and regulation strategies through a variety of mediums, including video demonstrations, role play, and case studies. Planned with the Dietitians in Medical Nutrition Therapy (DMNT) DPG

Learning Objectives

  • Describe changes in client presentation that may occur with nervous system activation, through the lens of polyvagal theory.
  • Integrate the four “R”s of trauma-informed care into both organizational structures and one-on-one counseling.
  • Implement two practical nervous system regulation strategies to support digestion, bowel regularity, and reduced meal-time stress.
