Academy Urges Bipartisan Legislation to Prevent Shutdown

September 27, 2023 – The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics urges Congress to pass bipartisan legislation to keep the government running while avoiding cuts to critical programs and services.

Unless members of the 118th U.S. Congress pass a Continuing Resolution before the end of September, federal government programs and services millions of Americans rely upon will not be available as of October 1. Federal agencies that could be affected by a government shutdown include programs and services that affect nutrition and dietetics practitioners and the communities they serve.

The Academy recently joined nearly 700 organizations in advocating to Congress to pass a bipartisan continuing resolution to avoid the pending government shutdown. As stated in the letter to congressional leaders: “Shutdowns harm our nation’s overall economy, the financial security of individuals and families, government efficiency, and the public’s access to needed services. A shutdown would put the nation’s economy at risk, delay or interrupt services to millions, and disrupt the jobs of over a million workers, making it harder for people to put food on the table, a roof over their heads, and stay safe and healthy. A shutdown would make vulnerable communities including people of color more at risk and result in their disproportionate harm.”

The Academy will continue to monitor this issue and provide members with updates on how the government shutdown will affect the communities we serve.
