Recommendations Provided to HHS on Screening for Eating Disorders

11/19/2021 - Eating disorders are complex and to ensure health equity and effective treatment, it is essential to recognize eating disorders among diverse populations and provide collaborative, multidisciplinary health care. While the agency regards the evidence as insufficient to recommend screening, Academy comments encouraged the agency to recognize that valid and reliable screening tools are available, that BMI is an inappropriate screening measure, the effects of the pandemic significantly increased demand for treatment services, and that primary care physicians may not be adequately trained to detect patients at risk.

The Academy provided input to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in its request for comment on Draft Recommendation Statement and Draft Evidence Review: Screening for Eating Disorders. Read the Academy's comments.
