USDA Extends WIC Waiver Flexibilities Through COVID-19 Pandemic

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has extended critical WIC flexibilities to allow for providers to continue to operate the critical nutrition program for at-risk women and families while keeping them safe during the COVID-19 national emergency. These flexibilities will be in place through the COVID-19 pandemic.

On September 18, the Academy sent USDA nearly 1,700 letters from member advocates calling for the agency to extend WIC waiver flexibilities before the end of the federal fiscal year on September 30.

The Centers for Disease Control has reported an increased risk of severe illness and adverse pregnancy outcomes for those who are pregnant that contract COVID-19. The COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately impacted minority communities already at greater risk for negative maternal and child health outcomes. The Academy continues to advocate for access to maternal and child health services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
