New Academy Collaboration Will Provide Tools for Clinicians to Report Malnutrition Measures

February 6, 2020

CHICAGO – The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is collaborating with Premier Healthcare Solutions, Inc. - Premier Clinician Performance Registry to help make it easier for clinicians in hospitals, medium to large medical practices and other health care facilities to comply with reporting malnutrition quality measures to government agencies.

Premier is one of two qualified clinical data registries with malnutrition measures that satisfy reporting requirements under the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services 2020 Merit-based Incentive Payment System reporting program. These measures, stewarded by the Academy, serve to promote collaboration between registered dietitian nutritionists and physicians in reporting improvements in quality.

The malnutrition measures provide an opportunity for registered dietitian nutritionists to obtain credit for assessment and nutritional recommendations and for physicians to diagnose malnutrition.

"This malnutrition measures reporting system presents an enormous opportunity for registered dietitian nutritionists across the U.S. to successfully assess and treat malnourished patients while at the same time being incentivized for their efforts," said registered dietitian nutritionist and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics President Terri J. Raymond.

The goals of these reporting measures are better patient care and reducing hospital readmissions of patients with malnutrition.

"The Academy's collaboration with the Premier Clinician Performance Registry demonstrates our commitment to improving health and advancing the profession of nutrition and dietetics through research, education and advocacy," Raymond said.

Premier Clinician Performance Registry is making the following two quality measures available to users.

  1. Assessment of Nutritionally At-Risk Patients for Malnutrition and Development of Nutrition Recommendations/Interventions by a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (Quality Measure for Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Merit-based Incentive Payment System Reporting)
  2. Appropriate Malnutrition Diagnosis (Quality Measure for Physician Merit-based Incentive Payment System Reporting)
