Medicare Preventive Services

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics provides resources on Medicare in relation to preventive services such as obesity, cardiovascular disease and annual wellness visits. Annual Wellness Visit: The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PL 111-148 Sec. 4103) provides Medicare beneficiaries with an annual wellness visit to establish a personalized prevention plan for each individual. The annual visit consists of screenings (including body composition and family history), maps out a screening schedule for the next 5-10 years for the patient and provides referrals for counseling services for those patients identified as being "at risk" for certain chronic conditions. Co-pays and deductibles are waived for the annual wellness visit. RDs are listed as one of the eligible medical professionals who may screen and counsel Medicare beneficiaries.
