Academy Supports FDA Efforts To Determine Risk Factors in Foodborne Illness

08/10/2021 – Food safety continues to be one of the Academy's top priorities. In a comment letter submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on May 17, 2021, the Academy supported the agency's information collection of a survey that is part of a 10-year study on the occurrence of foodborne illness risk factors across a variety of facilities and will be used to inform and develop retail food safety initiatives, intervention strategies, and other policies. The Academy offered input on additional areas to explore in the survey, including new retail food options, modifying the survey to include trends connected to the COVID-19 pandemic, and statistical analysis and data sharing; the FDA expressed its appreciation for the Academy's letter, directly responding to it in its July 29, 2021 submission to the Office of Management and Budget.
