Academy Shares Recommendations on Non-Listed Major Food Allergens

09/01/2022 - The Food and Drug Administration's draft guidance regarding how it will consider declaring a food a “major food allergen” (that is not currently listed as one by federal statute) provides a scientifically rigorous framework balancing risk, prevalence, and severity of additional new allergens for food labeling purposes, according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

In comments submitted to the agency, the Academy suggested minor clarifications and suggestions as it further develops its processes, noted the importance of assessing disproportionate impacts on diverse and minority populations, and the value of a food allergy data element in electronic health records.
