Academy Recommends Strategic Priorities for the Office of Minority Health and Health Equity

02/27/2020 - The Academy highlighted the need for the Food and Drug Administration to prioritize representation from traditionally underserved groups in clinical trials. In our comment letter, sent last week, the Academy also addressed the importance of prioritizing communication to health care providers regarding the current body of clinical evidence to help them make more informed, patient-centered care decisions where relevant evidence may be limited.

Direct outreach to racial and ethnic minority, underrepresented and underserved populations will help promote access to relevant information on medical products to improve safety and efficacy. The Academy also stressed the importance of collaborating with minority health groups to address research gaps, including: the National Organization of Blacks in Dietetics and Nutrition; Latinos and Hispanics in Dietetics and Nutrition; Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Member Interest Group; Indians in Nutrition and Dietetics Member Interest Group; National Minority Quality Forum; and National Medical Association.
