Academy Highlights Importance of Nutrition Care in Input Sent to AHRQ

09/28/2020 - Every day, Academy members provide medical nutrition therapy for patients in clinical settings, including pre- and post-surgery.

In a comment letter submitted on September 28, 2020 to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Academy summarized the role of MNT in surgical care and recovery and offered suggestions to enhance the utility of the staff and patient surveys. These included providing an option for staff to identify as an RDN, and recommendations the agency measure usage of perioperative plans of care, NPO criteria, pre- and post-surgical nutrition recommendations, as well as unintentional patient weight loss and the patient's need for assistance with food access, security and preparation.
