Infant Formula Supply Chain Information

The Academy continues to support RDNs and NDTRs regarding the formula supply chain issues. The Pediatric Nutrition DPG held a Pop-in where field experts helped troubleshoot problems related to the infant formula shortage, share resources, and network. The audio recording is posted at www.pnpg.org/pnpg/resources/abbott-formula-recall. PNPG's open access website page has additional information and resources regarding infant/pediatric formulas.

A variety of resources are available through the Pediatric Nutrition Care Manual (PNCM) and the Pediatric Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group (PNPG). While both resources require subscription or membership for ongoing access, the Academy does offer a 4-day free trial to the PNCM which allows access to the Client Education/Diets, Calculators, Formulary, Comparison Tool, and Resources. Anyone can sign up by visiting www.nutritioncaremanual.org/pediatric-nutrition-care and clicking on "Start Your Free 4-Day Trial" to complete the online forms. Academy members can learn more about the benefits of joining PNPG by visiting www.pnpg.org/pnpg/about/benefits as well as access a sample Infant Formula Table for download.

More resources available to support RDNs and NDTRs include the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN) Substitutions for Recalled Formulas Table, information on USDA WIC formula recall waiver, Abbott's latest statement on the recall and a Q&A from the American Academy of Pediatrics.

In addition, the practice paper "The Risk of Homemade Infant Formulas: Historical and Contemporary Considerations" was published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in May 2021.

For families receiving formula from WIC (the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children), you may need to contact other WIC accepting stores or pharmacies in your area if your usual location is unable to provide formula at this time. By downloading the WIC Shopper App, caregivers are able to search for other stores accepting WIC.

For additional information about the WIC formula recall waiver, please visit the USDA's page about infant formula safety.

Hearing on Infant Formula Shortages Scheduled for May 25

The House Committee on Energy & Commerce’s Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee will hold a hearing on Wednesday, May 25, on infant formula shortages. Academy members have been asked to share stories about how the shortage has impacted their patients and clients.

Infant Formula Safety Tips

Some steps to ensure the safety of infant formula include:

  • Choose an infant formula that's safe. For more information on choosing an infant formula that's safe, visit the CDC and FDA pages on the topic.
  • Don't make homemade infant formula. See the FDA's page for more information.
  • Do not buy formula online that comes from outside the United States. This formula could be counterfeit, for example it might have a fake label with a wrong use-by-date.
  • Properly prepare and store infant formula. For information on proper preparation and storage, visit the CDC's page.
  • Properly clean, sanitize, and store infant feeding items. Visit the CDC's page for more information.
  • Always wash your hands. For information on how and when to wash your hands, visit the CDC's page.

Resources for Finding Hypoallergenic and Amino Acid-based Formulas

Families have also noted difficulties finding other powder formulas that are typically available on store shelves including formulas for premature infants and hypoallergenic formulas. If the child is a healthy term infant changing to another infant formula is okay and should be tolerated by the infant. If the formula was "prescribed" by a medical professional contact the child's healthcare provider or pediatric dietitian if problems finding the child's formula continues. The table below has links to assist with locating infant formula for families.
