03/09/2022 - This year's theme for National Nutrition Month® 2022 is Celebrate a World of Flavors. In honor of Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day on March 9, we asked Academy members:
How do you help people create healthy habits while celebrating their cultural foods and heritage?
The Academy received 42 thoughtful responses that support the value of RDNs' services. The winner of the 2022 Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day contest is Abigail Czekaj, RDN, LD, of Akron, Ohio. Here is her response:
"I believe that small sustainable changes are the key to fostering healthy habits. Honoring cultural foods and heritage is an innate aspect of building a balanced lifestyle. Culture defines who we are through how we eat, live, and celebrate. Registered dietitian nutritionists are able to build and foster connections with patients by learning more deeply about their cultural traditions. We can use this knowledge and connection to look at their life and figure out where the smartest changes can be made without losing their traditions. Starting small is the key and creating a strong foundation and relationship will lead to success."
Czekaj is the international sales manager for Celebrate Vitamins, a bariatric nutrition supplement company. She oversees the company's international accounts and develops recipes for the company's communications and medical platforms.
Thank you to Abigail Czekaj—and to all registered dietitian nutritionists and nutrition and dietetics technicians, registered—for all you do to help improve the nutritional health of Americans and people around the world.
