Academy Submits Recommendations for Dietary Guidelines Scientific Report

08/14/2020 - The 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans must be informed by rigorous, scientific evidence that represents all Americans. Thanks to the input received by members, yesterday, the Academy submitted its recommendations for the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee's Scientific Report.

The Academy appreciates the input submitted by Academy members and dietetic practice groups to shape our comments. All Academy members and DPGs were encouraged to provide feedback during the 29-day comment period. Last month, the Academy held a listening session for members to discuss the review and submission process for these comments. To develop our comments, the Academy organized a collaborative and think tank groups (both consisting of Academy members), dedicated to addressing key areas of the report. The Academy's Legislative and Public Policy Committee is responsible for the final approval of our comments.

The U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services will consider comments, as well as the committee's report, as the agencies draft the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The final guidelines are expected to be issued later this year.

The Academy has been deeply involved throughout the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines process. Ten Academy members served on the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. The valuable work of registered dietitian nutritionists and other staff at U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services helped support the charge of the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee and will be instrumental in the translation of the report into the Dietary Guidelines recommendations.

Earlier this week, Academy President Linda T. Farr, RDN, CSOWM, LD, FAND, presented the Academy's comments to the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on the Scientific Report of the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.
