Process Overview

The Academy National nomination and election processes and procedures are comprehensive to ensure members have the information to decide who will be the future leaders of their organization. The process of selecting candidates is detailed and deliberate—from soliciting nominees, fine-tuning nomination forms, crafting interview questions and making final selections from a pool of very qualified individuals.

Call for Nominations

The Academy announces the call for nominations for national Academy positions through email, print and electronic publications, online and social media channels. Nominations are accepted year round by sending an email to Nominations. Self-nominations are accepted and encouraged.

Preliminary Reviews

Nominees are asked to complete biographical sketches, which include digital photos, self-recorded videos and curricula vitae or resumes. Materials submitted from nominees are reviewed and compared to the skill sets of each position.

Ballot Petitions

Nominees who did not make the ballot that year have an option to petition members for enough signatures to be added.

Nominee Interviews

The Nominating Committee holds virtual interviews during the months of October and November for candidates for the President-Elect, Treasurer-Elect and Speaker-Elect positions.

Committee Meeting

The Nominating Committee meets to review the materials submitted by candidates, taking into consideration which positions are available on the ballot, assessing key personal and interpersonal attributes and demonstrated leadership skills as they relate to the qualifications and skill set needs for each position. Areas of practice and inclusion of diverse or underrepresented groups are also considered.

Slate of Candidates Announcement

Candidates are announced and candidate photos and/or videos, biographical sketches and responses to questions posed by Nominating Committee are posted online.

Voting Opens

From February 1-15, Academy members participate in national elections through electronic voting.

Election Results Announcement

The Academy announces election results to members after all votes are tallied and candidates have been notified.

Nominating and Election Process Review
