Music City Center, Room 101

Proficiency: Advanced knowledge/expertise

Tracks: Sports, Fitness and Performance, Technology & Artificial Intelligence

CPE: 1.5

Description

Familiarity with wearable technologies such as Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs), hydration monitoring systems, and sports watches, and understanding the biometric data they provide can enable sports dietitians to provide more impactful, personal recommendations to athletes. However, it is important to discern the relevance and limitations of the technology and data. Dietitians have a responsibility to safeguard athletes’ mental health while aiming to optimize physical health and performance. This responsibility includes being mindful of how certain technologies may impact mental well-being. Therefore, dietitians should have an awareness of potential psychological risks associated with wearable technology. Attendees will be able to translate biometric data from wearable technology into actionable, logical, and practical ways to optimize health and performance while recognizing risk factors that may indicate certain athletes are poor candidates for specific types of wearable technology.

Planned with the Committee for Lifelong Learning

  • List two or more forms of wearable technology and describe their strengths and limitations.
