ERS and NIFA Relocation Focus of Senate Committee Hearing

07/17/2019 - The Academy continues to oppose the relocation of the Economic Research Service and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture federal agencies from Washington, D.C. region to Kansas City, Mo. Concerns over the relocation were discussed during last week's Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry hearing on the 2018 Farm Bill implementation.

Dr. Hutchins, Deputy Under Secretary, Research, Education, and Economics, USDA, testified for nearly an hour before the committee had to break for a vote. Multiple questions were submitted to Dr. Hutchins for follow-up due to time constraints.

At this time, at least two-thirds of experienced researchers and other workforce members have declined to relocate. In addition, Sen. Patrick Leahy (Vt.) requested a full report of the cost-benefit analysis. The Academy submitted written comments opposing the move for the record for the hearing.
