Senate Leadership Announces Bipartisan Budget Deal

2/07/2018 - On Wednesday, February 7, U.S. Senate leadership announced a bipartisan budget deal to raise defense and nondefense spending levels by nearly $300 billion for two years.

The Academy applauds the agreement which, if enacted, would include critical nondefense discretionary funding for programs, such as federal nutrition programs and public health, by raising nondefense spending by $63 billion in fiscal year 2018 and $68 billion in fiscal year 2019. The Academy has urged Congress to allocate strong funding for health programs and restore cuts and secure increases.

As part of NDD United, an alliance of more than 2,000 national, state and local organizations working to protect investments in core government functions that benefit all Americans, the Academy has signed on to letters supporting the raising of the caps and served as reviewer for the document, "Faces of Austerity 2.0: How Budget Cuts Continue to Make Us Sicker, Poorer and Less Secure" which highlights federal government programs that help ensure older Americans can eat healthful and nutritious meals.
