Plans to Divert Public Health and Medical Research Funds Announced

10/01/2018 - The Department of Health and Human Services' plans to transfer $266 million from other accounts in the Department's budget to accommodate the recent increase in costs associated with unaccompanied children and their families at the Office of Refugee Resettlement.

Funds will be directed from public health and medical research to respond to the number of unaccompanied children created by the Administration's family separation policy.

The Academy and other organizations are urging HHS Secretary Azar to make the funding plan for the family separation policy public and encouraging Congress to provide the funding necessary — through annual or supplemental appropriations legislation — to ensure the health and well-being of children and families in the Department's care.
