NIFA Announces $41.4 Million in Grants for SNAP Participants

11/11/2019 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture recently announced $41.4 million in competitive grants that will support projects to increase the purchase of fruits and vegetables for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program participants. The Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program, reauthorized by the 2018 Farm Bill, is providing funding for these grants.

In a press release, NIFA Director J. Scott Angle stated that these grants are a "win-win" for both SNAP participants and for the farmers at farmers markets (where many of these projects operate), adding that this effort will strengthen "local and regional food systems, making them more sustainable."
