Medicaid Program for Seniors and those Living with Disabilities Advances

09/25/2018 - The EMPOWER Care Act (HR 5306), a measure that would reauthorize a Medicaid program that helps older Americans and people with disabilities move out of skilled nursing facilities, was advanced by the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Funding for the program officially expired in 2016, and states have been using reserve funds since then, but must stop accepting new participants by the end of this year and can only use remaining funds to help existing enrollees through 2020.

The reauthorization, which requires $450 million annually, has received bipartisan support, and will likely be considered after the midterm elections.
