FDA Unveils New Strategy

04/06/2018 - The Food and Drug Administration has announced a comprehensive multiyear Nutrition Innovation Strategy with two goals:

  • To foster innovation and spark competition among industry to reduce preventable death and disease related to poor nutrition
  • To ameliorate persistent health and socio-economic disparities among populations

The strategy is still being developed, and the FDA will engage with "stakeholders to seek input and further explore how to best promote public health in the evolving food and beverage marketplace." This engagement includes a public meeting to be held this summer.

The FDA is expanding its commitment to initiatives in which the Academy and members are involved, such as modernizing label claims, ingredient labels and standards of identity; continuing efforts to implement the Nutrition Facts Label and menu labeling initiatives, and to reduce sodium.
