Academy Urges Congress to Address Health Care System Shortfalls

09/29/2017 - Earlier this month, the Academy and other prominent health care organizations issued a joint letter urging Congressional leadership to take “swift action to address the looming shortfalls and program expirations facing some of the most crucial elements of our health care system.”

The letter seeks to prevent funding cuts for five programs and services:

  • The Children’s Health Insurance Program
  • Community Health Centers
  • Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospital payments
  • Maternal, Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program
  • The National Health Service Corps

Without congressional action, funding for those programs will undergo significant cutbacks beginning on October 1, 2017. The Academy, along with the other groups who signed the letter, are advocating for those programs and services to keep existing funding and be extended for “no less than a five-year period.”
