Academy Supports Establishment of U.S. House Select Committee on Hunger

05/20/2019 - The Academy joined the Alliance to End Hunger's request to Speaker Nancy Pelosi for the creation of a Select Committee on Hunger within the U.S. House of Representatives. During the 1980s and early 1990s, a similar select committee focused on hunger and food insecurity in the U.S. and throughout the world. Currently, more than 40 million people in the United States struggle with poverty and hunger.

The issues driving hunger are complex and multifaceted and hinder stability and progress both in the United States and on a global scale. The alliance notes that the "unique interconnectedness of issues driving hunger presents a challenge to American policy that is difficult to pin on the jurisdiction of any existing policymaking mechanism within the current House committee structure."
