Academy Encourages Senate to Take Action to Reopen Government

01/16/2019 - The Academy has communicated with leaders in the U.S. Senate requesting their action to pass appropriations bills already passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in order to reopen the government and ensure continued access to important nutrition programs and services.

In the letter sent last week, the Academy noted the impact of the partial shutdown on nutrition programs including their funding, oversight, and administration as well as the potential for harm to Americans that could result from decreased food safety or access to health care services.

The partial government shutdown began when lawmakers failed to pass seven remaining spending bills before the December 21 deadline, thereby furloughing approximately 380,000 workers and withholding pay from another 420,000 despite requiring them to report for work.
