Submit Your National Nutrition Month® Event to the Student Award Program

03/17/2016 - Are you celebrating National Nutrition Month®, the month dedicated to nutrition education and nutrition professionals?

What is National Nutrition Month®?

National Nutrition Month® focuses on the importance of making appropriate food choices and cultivating healthy eating habits while promoting Academy members as the nutrition experts. It began as "National Nutrition Week" in 1973 as a way to promote the importance of nutrition to the public through Academy members.

This year, the theme for National Nutrition Month® is "Savor the Flavor of Eating Right" which encourages everyone to take the time to appreciate the traditions and social experiences associated with food. Imagine the foods you love, their flavors, and the enrichment they can add to our lives. When you think about it, the experience of eating is just as important as what we eat, and we need the help of all Academy members to spread this message! This is the perfect opportunity for student dietetics associations and clubs to share an Academy initiative on campus while talking about one of our favorite things – food!

Here are some ideas for how you can promote National Nutrition Month®:

  • Become familiar with the resources available for members at These include a toolkit with event ideas that are suitable for schools, workplaces, grocery stores and supermarkets, as well as ways to get everyone involved. Eat Right handouts and nutrition tip sheets are also accessible online and can be reproduced for educational purposes. In addition, the Academy has developed suggested activities for kids and adults, including nutrition Sudoku, word searches, interactive games and PowerPoint presentations to support National Nutrition Month® events.
  • Promote National Nutrition Month® on social media by sharing interactive games, quizzes, and tips from the National Nutrition Month® website. Post pictures on Instagram, share articles on Facebook, or write your own tweets for Twitter. Use the hashtags #NationalNutritionMonth and #futureRDN to get involved with the Academy on social media!
  • Be sure to review and follow the mark and slogan®guidelines for using the National Nutrition Month. These were developed to preserve its significance and to protect its federally registered service mark.
  • Submit your National Nutrition Month® event to the Student Award Program. This program recognizes student dietetics associations/clubs that host events in support of National Nutrition Month®. Submissions that follow the program guidelines will be eligible to win an award. Program guidelines can be found in the Library of the Academy's Student Community. Applications for the award will be accepted from March 1 to April 4, 2016. Talk to your Student Liaison about hosting an event!

During the month of March, we encourage you to make an impact and demonstrate how you "Savor the Flavor of Eating Right."
