In 2016, the Academy celebrated reaching the milestone of 100,000 nutrition and dietetics practitioners, which included both registered dietitian nutritionists and nutrition and dietetics technicians, registered.
Now, for the first time, there are 100,000 registered dietitian nutritionists at the same time. Academy member Elizabeth Oregel, RD, DTR, of Los Angeles, Calif., recently became the 100,000th RDN.
A graduate of California State University – Los Angeles and the Public Health Foundation Enterprises Dietetic Internship in Irwindale, Calif., Oregel also is a Pathway 3 dietetics technician, registered.
According to Oregel: "It takes a lot of work, effort, and sacrifice to become an RDN. For me this road has been long and challenging. To achieve the RDN credential is a dream come true, and on top of it to become the 100,000th RDN has been amazing.
"I want to thank PHFE WIC for the opportunity to complete the internship and for their continued support and encouragement in my journey. It makes me delighted to join a community of caring and passionate individuals."
The number of RDNs has grown more than five-fold since 1969, when registration for RDNs was established. At that time, there were 19,457 registered dietitians.
