2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans Released

12/29/2020 - The Academy is conducting a thorough review of the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans released on December 29 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The Academy has been engaged throughout the entirety of the development process and supports the recommendations outlined in the newly released 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and its "life stages" approach. On initial review, many of the Academy’s recommendations were taken into consideration and are largely reflected in the updated statements. For the first time, the Dietary Guidelines are based on life stage and use language such as "customize," calling out the importance for meeting diverse individual needs, stating "The Dietary Guidelines provides a framework intended to be customized to individual needs and preferences, as well as the foodways of the diverse cultures in the United States."

Academy members, including registered dietitian nutritionists and nutrition and dietetics technicians, registered, are at the forefront of educating and providing safe and nutritious foods to the American population. RDNs and NDTRs will leverage the USDA tools to amplify the messages for dissemination and implementation of the guidelines.

The Academy offers its congratulations to the Scientific Advisory Committee and the USDA/HHS staff for their work developing a consumer-facing and science-based set of Dietary Guidelines. The Academy applauds the work that went into these guidelines and continues to request increased funding for nutrition and dietetics research.
