07/15/2020 - The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee on July 15 released its Scientific Report of the 2020 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee. The U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Health and Human Services will consider the report as the agencies draft the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The final guidelines are expected to be issued later this year, and the report's scientific conclusions should ensure the guidelines are "based on the preponderance of the scientific and medical knowledge which is current at the time the report is prepared."
The Academy is reviewing the report, to which we already contributed substantial input during its development. The Academy will provide comments to the report during the 29-day comment period started by the report's release.
Members are invited to learn more about the Academy's planned review and comment submission during a listening session scheduled for Friday, July 17 at 11 a.m. (Central time).
Academy members are encouraged to provide feedback through their dietetic practice groups, which, together with think tanks of subject matter experts within the Academy's membership and the Academy's Dietary Guidelines Collaborative, will provide input to the Academy for this important review process.
As always, the Academy has been deeply involved throughout the process, including:
- Encouraged USDA to revise its anticipated timeline to take full advantage of the additional 2 ½ months the committee was allotted under its charter to answer important scientific questions it was tasked with answering;
- Called for transparency in the end stages of the DGA development process; and
- Urged a continuing commitment to scientific rigor.
Ten Academy members served on the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee.
