Academy Offers to Support Education on Appropriate Identification of Malnutrition for CMS Auditors

10/06/2020 - In response to the Office of Inspectors General's July 2020 Report on hospital inpatient claims for severe malnutrition, the Academy joined ASPEN, the American Society for Nutrition, and the Association of Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialists in writing to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Center for Program Integrity to share concerns with the report findings and offer potential opportunities for improvement.

The recent letter is part of education and advocacy efforts by the Malnutrition Coding and Reimbursement Task Force to help the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the OIG, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services understand the best practices for diagnosing, documenting, and coding malnutrition.
