01/05/2021 - As the Academy continues to pursue the adoption of the malnutrition quality measures into the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting Program, a milestone was accomplished at the end of December 2020 when CMS published the final 2020 Measures Under Consideration List with the inclusion of the MUC20-0032 Global Malnutrition Composite Score.
The goal is reporting quality performance for payment elevating the RDN role and recognizing hospital clinical staffing for optimal malnutrition outcomes. The Global Malnutrition Composite Score is now being reviewed during the CMS Measure Application Partnership Workgroup meetings by the Rural Health Workgroup on January 6, 2021 and the Hospital Workgroup on January 11 and will then move onto the MAP Coordinating Committee on January 25 for final adoption on the MUC List.
Paralleling this process, the National Quality Forum Prevention and Population Health Standing Committee will review the Global Malnutrition Composite Score during its measures meeting on February 17, 2021. Based on the committee's measure endorsement recommendations, the next step includes that the NQF Consensus Standards Approval Committee review and recommend the submitted standards (measures) for endorsement.
The Academy is optimistic that the Global Malnutrition Composite Score will be included in the CMS Proposed Rule for the HIQR Program expected to be published in the spring followed by a public commenting period. The Final Rule is likely to be released in the summer of 2021 with reporting implementation in 2022.
